Award-winning composer pianist Tze (Tze Toh) has worked on a diverse array of productions, creating music for full-length feature films, contemporary dance, animation, documentaries, east-meets-west fusion albums, multi-disciplinary projects.
He has composed works for world-renowned musicians, such as harmonica virtuoso Yasuo Watani, and for international events such as Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame 2010. He recently completed and performed the “live” score for Glasgow-based Singaporean theatre practitioner/writer Ramesh Meyyappan's theatre piece, Snails and Ketchup, which is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympics.
In 2011 he won first prize in the Instrumental category of the 2011 UK Songwriting competition, and was semi-finalist in 3 other categories: Olympic, Love song, Instrumental, with his 4 other compositions, In 2010, he was semi-finalist in the International Songwriting competition (ISC)
He has performed both locally and overseas for various shows/festivals, including the ASEAN Jazz Festival, Singapore Arts Festival - Flipside, MOSAIC Music festival, Hua Yi Arts Festival (Festival of Chinese Arts), Kalaa Utsavam (Festival of Indian Arts), Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011, and also the Indonesian Music Expo (IMEX) 2011
A self-taught composer and pianist, he traverses between the two contrasting musical worlds of composition and improvisation with equal frequency and inspiration. He believes in the beauty of logic- exploring basic themes and forms, and allowing spontaneity to evolve the music and bring it to new places.
His personal sound is a fusion of various influences - he’s released his debut album with his east-west fusion band, Tze n Looking Glass : Stories from wonderland, combining elements of film score, jazz, Chinese/Indian music, European classical music.
Their second album, Return to wonderland will be released Feb 2012, featuring all new arrangements for the fusion band with a 12 piece string ensemble, recorded “live” at their concert at the Esplanade Recital Studio in Sep 2011.
